June Wrap-Up

What I Read In June

I read fewer books than usual this month, but had a really high percentage of winners. I read seven in total, and four of those were five-star books! It’s so hard to pick a favorite, so I’ll cheat and pick two: I Like To Watch and The Kingdom. My least favorite was definitely Me Myself & Him, which I reviewed last week.

Features

I didn’t have any discussion posts planned this month, but then I read that horrid interview with Kathleen Hale that BookPage published… and oops my hand slipped and I wrote a thousand words about what an irresponsible article that was.

BookPage handed Hale a microphone to promote her book, defend her actions, and refuse blame… and simply left it at that. No analysis, no framing, and certainly no other side to the story.”

-Me, very mad at BookPage

Things That Aren’t Books

What I’m Watching

I’m almost finished with my grand MCU rewatch with my littlest sibling. We’re seeing Endgame in theaters tomorrow. She hasn’t seen it yet–we were waiting until she had filled in the gaps of the movies she hadn’t seen yet. I’m so excited!

In other movies, I loved Toy Story 4 and Always Be My Maybe.

In television, I binged all of What/If on Netflix, which was… what??? It started out as bewildering in a good way, but then became bewildering in the bad way. I’m really enjoying making my way through Brooklyn 99.

What I’m Listening To

As always, my favorite listen is the NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast, which gets a special shout-out this month because the host, Linda Holmes, debuted as a fiction author this month–yay!

I’ve been enjoying listening to Billie Eilish, Gregory Alan Isakov, and the just-released cast recording of the Oklahoma revival.

I’m halfway through the audiobook of Gingerbread, and the narration by author Helen Oyeyemi is just wonderful.

…and something to come…

With a couple other bloggers, I’m cooking up a special project that’ll begin this August. Keep an eye on my twitter in the next week or so, because I’ll be fishing around for people who might want to contribute writing or art!
